Citations

[edit]

An anon user has now three times removed requests for citations. Without recourse to discussion. Regardless of this behaviour, the simple fact is that there are a number of problematic assertions in the text which border on POV and commentary and absolutely require cites. Two of the worst offenders are:

  • "[Dundalk's 2nd round European Cup performance in 1979] is regarded as one of the best performances by a League of Ireland club in European competition". Regarded by whom? Unless this can be cited definitively it remains a classic example of a breach of WP:WEASEL.
  • "Every game was picketed and with the crowds practically gone the team invariably suffered". Says who? Again, it is speculative commentary and opinion to suggest that there is a direct causal relationship here. Again, unless cited this will be removed.

While there are other examples of commentary/POV problems, the MAIN issue is that the article also appears to rely on ONE (and only one) source. Which causes problems with WP:SOURCES for a base on "reliable, third-party published source with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy". With absolutely no offence intended to Mr Doolan's book, to meet WP:VER this article absolutely needs to rely on a broader range of sources. Guliolopez (talk) 16:40, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok calm down and stop being so pedantic. Regarding both questions real Irish football fans know that Dundalk's performance is regarded as one of the best [1]. Also [2] provides evidence in the latter query.
Lastly grateful if you could leave these issues to football people who dont vandalise.(82.198.140.206 (talk) 16:49, 28 November 2008 (UTC)).[reply]
Firstly, I am perfectly calm. Secondly, I am not being "pedantic". I am referring to some of the core guidelines of the project. (WP:NPOV and WP:VER).
To your other points - I am a "real Irish football fan", and - in my opinion - Cork City have an equal claim to "one of the greatest European performances". I was in the terraces when they upset Bayern Munich. Regardless, opinion has no place here. That's the whole point - there should be no unverifiable or "widely regarded" style commentary in the project. Simple as that. (And your assertion that a request for sources is vandalism is laughable. In particular when you warring behaviour has removed other valid changes). Well I am a calm Rovers fan and IMO one of the greatest European performances was our win in Poland that I witnessed. Dont get so worked about the article pal. (83.71.1.165 (talk) 14:06, 1 December 2008 (UTC))[reply]
